Feel free to use the generated audio for any of your projects (commercial or personal). Hope it's useful for you:) This online tool lets you generate a style voice (not the exact original) that you can play and download easily. Just wait for it to load (it may take a minute or so as it's a 2mb piece of software) then type your text in the box and click 'Speak'. You can download the speech by clicking the link that will appear under the 'Speak' button. Old-school text to speech is great fun to play around with. Try testing it on long or hard to pronounce words, use it to narrate your silly YouTube video, post it as a message to a friend's facebook wall - the possibilities are endless. All thanks goes to for porting the to JavaScript!
If there's anything I can do to improve 'Microsoft Sam Online', please let me know! Note: I was alerted in the comments to the fact that this is not quite the Microsoft Sam voice! It's apparently the voice synthesizer used by Ubuntu. I'll keep my eye out for a JavaScript port of the actual Microsoft Sam voice and update this translator if I find it. Until then I hope that you found this page mainly looking for a general computerised voice rather than the exact Microsoft Sam accent. Sorry for the inconvenience!
Microsoft introduced new TTS voice called 'Anna' on Vista OS. Sadly it is only available for Vista and no separate download option for Windows XP users, personally I still use Windows XP on many machines. ? You can find more info about TTS (Text To Speech engines on ). New voice 'Anna' is more clear and more natural, than any other voice available on XP versi0ns. Still, there is an option to use 'Anna' voice on XP for FREE.
You need to download and install! It is available for FREE (60 day trial version is download-able from ).
Its huge, about 1,5 GB, so you need some place on your hard disk for download. So download and install Streets 2009.
With it also Microsoft nice 'Anna' TTS engine is installed to pronounce (speak) street names. You can enjoy this product for 60 days, or uninstall it the same day — 'Anna' engine will not be uninstalled!
? It is still left on system. You can check its properties through Control Panel’s Speech category settings. It is also possible to extract only TTS Anna setup files (About 32 MB). But still you should download Streets at first. Then after installation start, look for temp folder where temporary installation files were extracted. Most probably it will be your User’s 'Documents and Settings/Local settings/Temp' Folder. Look for TTS.
I like the SAPI 4 voice of Mary. It is superior to the SAM voice for SAPI 5, which comes with XP. To use SAPI 4 voices with XP, download and install the redistributable Microsoft Speech API 4.0 file (spchapi.EXE).
Also, you would need to download and install the Microsoft Speech Control Panel (SpchCpl.exe); the Speech Control Panel will add an icon to your Control Panel to enable you to list the compatible text-to-speech engines installed on your system and customize their settings for your use. I’ve been using (and upgrading when available) a free TTS program called, “Balabolka” for a few years now. I really like it. In fact, I now have the portable version on a jump-drive.
In the FAQ at the site that provides Balaboka (cross-plus-a.com), I found the above info on installing the SAPI 4 voices (and links to the necessary files). Wikipedia has an article on the subject too.
There are a few more voices, but only Anna appears available in 64-bit Windows 7. If you're using a 32-bit application, you can change the 32-bit voice using a hidden control panel. Type 'C:WindowsSysWOW64SpeechSpeechUXsapi.cpl' (without quotes) into the search box in the Start menu and press Enter - I see Microsoft Mary and Mike as options here.
If you install packages of other voices, many will only be available in this window and not in the 64-bit window. I'm unaware of any additional 64-bit voices.

Mustafa Sandal. The slinky, mysterious gumbo groove “Voo Doo” comes from Yellow Moon, which was produced by Daniel Lanois. After recording together as the Meters and as the backing band for Wild Tchoupitoulas in the 1970s, the Nevilles officially teamed up for an unsuccessful 1978 debut album. They have since produced a series of successful albums which have kept them in the forefront of the New Orlean’s scene while building a worldwide fan club. While their string of albums garnered tremendous critical acclaim and guest appearances by Keith Richards, Jerry Garcia, Carlos Santana and others, it was not until the 1989 release Yellow Moon that the Nevilles achieved the commercial success they deserved.
Since I posted yesterday, I've gotten some questions about the TTS engines that Microsoft includes in the OS itself. Well, here's the deal.
Microsoft Anna Voice
Microsoft has shipped TTS engines in the OS before. In the Windows XP time frame, for example, we shipped three different voices that were all based on the same underlying technology: Microsoft Mary, Microsoft Mike, and Microsoft Sam.They were OK, but certainly not something you'd want to listen to all day long (IMO). You can hear what they sound like here:,.
In Windows Vista, though, we've completely revamped the technology. As a result we have a 'new' voice built right into the OS named Microsoft Anna. Here's what she sounds like:. As you can tell, Anna sounds more human than Mary, Mike, and Sam. As time goes by, the voices will become more and more natural.
Someday, you won't even be able to tell the difference between a synthesized voice and a real human voice. I created these.WAV files by simply using one of the sample applications included with the, called TTSApp. This seems like a great comparison of various different TTS systems.
I have to say that Microsoft SAM sounds no better than the system available on the Amiga two decades earlier. Anna seems slightly better, the one demoed in the WWDC Keynote better still. The Neospeech sample from that page sounds absolutely amazing. The phrasing is slightly off, but it could be because the text is ambiguous, but the sound is completely natural. I understand that you can’t go shipping 600mb of sample for each language with the OS, but the difference between the built in one and the state of the art is night and day.
